It is essential to properly introduce your puppy to grooming. There are many benefits to socialising a puppy, but the window of opportunity is small, so it’s essential to know when and what you need to do and to plan ahead of time.
A puppy should be introduced to the salon environment soon after their final vaccinations, at 10 to 12 weeks of age. Leaving this important step beyond 16 weeks may lead to behaviour issues later.
The puppy introduction price applies to dogs under 16 weeks of age who are still in the critical socialisation period. Training should start at four weeks of age. Puppyhood is over by 20 weeks of age.
Please plan for this critical aspect of your puppy’s development, as we may book 6 to 8 weeks in advance.
Short-Coated Breeds from £33
Long or Wool/Wool Mix Breeds from £40
If you do not plan for this critical socialisation phase, grooming may be harder, more stressful, and sometimes unsafe. Puppies who are not properly introduced often feel threatened, leading to shaking, vocal stress, or a fight-or-flight response later.
To help you with your puppy’s socialisation, we aim to settle your puppy with a gentle bath, brush, and blow-dry before trimming around the eyes and feet. We’ll introduce your puppy to nail trimming, too. This approach is just enough of a challenge without being scary. We want your puppy to enjoy returning to FCL far into the future. Then, on the next visit, your puppy should be ready for a more extended stay to trim and style the coat to your specifications. Some puppies with a nervous disposition or those not yet fully socialised may need another puppy introduction before a full groom can be completed.

Puppies should be gradually introduced to brushing and grooming from 8–12 weeks of age to promote positive handling experiences and help prevent grooming-related behavioural issues in later life.
Behavioural resistance and separation anxiety become significantly more common once a dog reaches adolescence or adulthood without positive early grooming exposure.
Puppies should ideally begin structured training and socialisation sessions between 10 and 16 weeks of age to support behavioural development, confidence, and positive social skills.
To find a good puppy class locally, focus less on flashy advertising and more on the trainer’s methods, class structure, and qualifications.
Here are the main things to look for.
Positive reinforcement methods only: treats, praise, toys, and encouragement, rather than punishment or intimidation.
Small, calm classes, ideally around 6–8 puppies rather than chaotic large groups.
Structured socialisation, meaning controlled interactions rather than puppies running wild together.
Trainers with recognised UK credentials such as ABTC registration, APDT UK, IMDT, or involvement in the Kennel Club Good Citizen scheme.
A trainer who is happy for you to observe a class before booking.
Puppies develop through clearly recognisable stages, each one being characterised by certain behaviour patterns and emotional reactions. These have been called The Ten Stages. Find out more by clicking the link below.
