HAND STRIPPING

For Wire-HAIRED BREEDS

Why Hand-Strip?

Hand-Stripping Maintains the Natural Wire, Harsh Texture and Colour of the Coat

Which Dogs Should Not Be Hand-Stripped?

After spaying or neutering, hand-stripping is unsuitable for your dog due to hormonal changes and a softer coat. Regular home bathing can soften the coat, making it difficult to strip comfortably.

Making an Appointment

A Hand-Stripping Specialist will evaluate your wire-haired breed to determine if this styling technique is suitable and ensure your dog is comfortable with the process.

Call us at 01246 453545, Tuesday to Saturday, 10 AM to 4:30 PM, to book an assessment. We look forward to hearing from you!

When and How Often to Hand-Strip?

Hand-stripping can only be performed during a specific growth phase, typically twice a year in spring and autumn.

Our prices start at £58 and may vary based on your dog’s needs. We offer a free consultation before you book to ensure we fully understand your requirements and can provide you with the best possible service. Please give us a call to schedule your consultation.

Due to the high demand for our groomers, we cannot hand-strip silky, gundog, large, or giant breeds, such as Airedale and Irish Wolfhound, because of time constraints.

A few factors must be considered when grooming a dog with a wire coat. For example, if the coat has been previously clipped, or if the dog has been bathed with shampoos or conditioners not meant for maintaining a wire coat, or if you plan to or have had your pet neutered, it may result in a soft coat. In such cases, clipping the coat may be a more suitable grooming technique that can be used more frequently throughout the year.

The coat will remain healthy and tangle-free if brushed on occasion with a Boar Bristle Brush.

Please read our Terms and Conditions of Service for more information.

When to Strip, the four stages of hair growth

Anagen Phase – This is when the new hairs are in an active state of growth

Catagen Phase – This is when the new hairs reach their maximum length and stop actively growing

Telogen Phase – This is when the hair becomes dormant, fully attached to the skin but not growing and is ready to be pushed out by new growth.

Once the hair is in the Telogen Phase of Wire-Haired Breeds (e.g. Border Terriers and Norfolk Terriers), it is ready to be Hand-Stripped as the root follicle detaches from the dermal papilla allowing the hair to be pulled without causing harm or distress to the dog.

Hand-Stripping can only be carried out in this phase, usually twice a year in spring and autumn.

Exogen Phase: Hair is shed

After stripping, we use ReQual®️ Keral-Prof shampoo from Italy, specially formulated for rough and semi-rough hair (terriers), followed by a Nutri-Derm Shampoo Re-Balancing Treatment to calm the skin.
